Interactive Design Company Gives Back with Summer Technology Camp for Rural Children
Designing Digitally, an Ohio-based interactive design firm, takes time out to help rural students discover the educational side of Second Life.

FRANKLIN, OH, July 09, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In an effort to give back to its local community, Designing Digitally recently held a summer technology camp to teach middle school students about open source software. Students were given jump drives equipped with Gimpshop, Inkscape, OpenOffice.org, and the Hippo Client to learn how they can use Second Life for educational purposes. They were also able to create T-shirts, magnets and YouTube videos.

The camp - held in Putnam County from June 15, 2009 to June 26, 2009 - was hosted by Andrew Hughes, president of Designing Digitally Inc. He is originally from Putnam County and attended the same camp as a child.

After leaving Putnam County for college, Hughes was informed the camp no longer existed. He approached the Putnam County Educational Service Center and asked if he could facilitate the camp to help continue this technology tradition.

Hughes believes that if he never had the opportunity to attend the camp as a child, he would have never attended school for Digital Design or started Designing Digitally, Inc. "Kids do not know what they have never been subjected to," said Hughes. "Hopefully planting the seed of interest in the students will spark them to integrate technology into their lives."

Designing Digitally has sponsored the summer technology camp for the last few years. Due to the success of last year's program, this year's camp was extended by another week.
